Not a total fail Fruits-of-the-Forest Crumb Bars

Sigh... Yet another SK recipe that didn't turn out as I expected.  I think Deb's gorgeous photos just raise my expectations too much!  I'm just one person, damnit, with an insufficient kitchen and metric conversions to do!  Oh, and I didn't follow the recipe exactly, so that might have been it...  Hey, fresh blueberries are spend-o-rama, and we happened to have some forest fruits in the freezer, and they looked so beautiful...

But oh well.  It was still tasty, even if there wasn't enough crumb to make the bars hold up, and even if it was a bit tart, and a weeeee bit bland... Basically, I think this could be easily remedied by doubling the crumb part of the recipe and (if you're using tarter fruits than bluebs) by adding another half cup of sugar to the filling mix, but I'm unlikely to be giving it another shot anytime soon.  There are just too many tempting recipes out there that I'd rather try!

So if you want to give it a shot, and either follow the recipe exactly as Deb writes it (this would be my suggestion– insolence is too often punished with bad baked goods) or tweak it in your own way, you can find it here.  No use in my typing it out here, so you can half-fail in the same way I did!  But if you do half-fail, a little canned whipped cream will fix it right up.

You're welcome.

  2. I like when people write about cooking "failures". Not every recipe is going to work out perfectly. It makes me feel human.

  3. I'm glad my failures make you feel human, because god knows I certainly am! Failures happen, and I fully plan on continuing to set baking-flop examples.
